In my experience this sort of problem often arises from users putting in
damn fool enquiries (e.g. select * from largest_table) and, getting
tired of waiting for a result, switching off the terminal. Once the
terminal session is lost init becomes the parent, as it does for all
orphan processes. Network problems could also cause this.
Talk to your users - find out their problems - educate them (threats of
violence should suffice ;-)
