With the old program, I believe you were allowed to retake each test one time within the year included in the $890 cost. With the new system you don't get a free retry, you pay full price again for each test you need to retake. Now being certified just means being certified in a particular specialty. Right now Informix offers what they call a DBA certification and a System Administrator certification, there might have been another one (I don't have my notes here at the moment), and more are supposed to follow in the future. Okay, so I have a wide variety of skills and want to become certified in several areas - let's start with the two currently available. So for starters, this is going to cost me $1000 ($250 * tests * 2 certifications). Naturally it will cost extra if I fail any test the first time. So now I've spent $1000 and I'm certified. How long does it last? According to my documentation so long as I'm using the same product and version (I believe it said platform too - hopefully they didn't really mean per hardware platform - that would cost consultants a fortune!). So assuming that there's 1 new version per year to become certified on, this is costing me $1000 bucks a year - minimum. I'm willing to be convinced it's worthwhile, but I think it's going to take market pressure to convince me. To be honest, I think I will do better by just keeping a good repuation. I would be interested in having anyone who takes the newly designed tests, let us know what you think of them.
