Hello, I am proud to announce Sys-Con Publications' newest monthly magazine, Sybase Developers Journal. Sys-Con is *the* leader in Powersoft related publications and books and will soon be releasing a series of book titles on other Sybase products. The premier issue of SDJ is scheduled for release in June. We are currently looking for quality material from talented writers. Those interested should contact Mike MacDonald at mikemacd@tiac.net on the Internet or at 71033,2742 on CompuServe. Articles should be of a technical nature covering any aspect of the Sybase product line and should be geared towards helping the beginner to advanced Sybase customer. Articles may range from System 11 topics, to professional growth as a Sybase professional, to developing applications using Sybase products, to Sybase middleware products. Articles can run from 1 page to 8 pages (a page is roughly equal to a page in MS Word at 10 pt) and should include graphics where appropriate. Screen shots should always be done in 640 X 480 X 256 mode and should normally be of the entire screen. These should be stored in BMP or PCX format though I recommend the latter as it is more compact. Screen shots should be both embedded in the article and saved as separate files. MS Word is the standard format though I will entertain other formats if contacted first. Please read the writer's guidelines included in this message for the complete instructions on how to submit articles as well as renumeration rates. Having your articles published in an international journal not only helps in the wallet, it adds to your professional prestige and (for some of you) raises your consulting rates by $10/hr. Interested writers should first contact Mike MacDonald with a brief outline of their proposed articles and an approximate length. Please pass this along to anyone else who might be interested. Thank you. Jane Roseen Managing Editor Sybase Developer's Journal SYBASE DEVELOPER'S JOURNAL WRITER'S GUIDELINES ---- DRAFT APRIL 25, 1996 --- SDJ is a publication of Sys-Con Publications Editorial Offices 46 Holly St., Jersey City, NJ 07305 Telephone: 914-735-1900 Fax: 914-735-3922 Questions and Article Ideas should be submitted to Michael MacDonald, CompuServe 71033,2742 or mikemacd@tiac.net All articles should be of interest to user's of Sybase products, particularly System 11. Articles may be interviews, book reviews, commentaries on the business environment, and so on, but we are primarily interested in articles of a technical nature. Most SDJ readers are technically proficient and articles should be written accordingly. We do not publish product comparisons ("Why Sybase is better than Oracle") though product reviews in general are welcome. Do not send articles without first submitting a proposal. The proposal should state what you plan to write about and, if necessary, why it would be of interest to SDJ readers. A loose outline would be helpful but not always necessary. If the article idea is acceptable, we will contact you with the go-ahead. PLEASE NOTE: MICHAEL MACDONALD IS NOT THE LONG-TERM EDITOR. AFTER THE FIRST COUPLE OF ISSUES, PLEASE BE SURE YOU DOWNLOAD THE REVISED GUIDELINES FOR CURRENT SUBMISSION PROCEDURES. OR, OBTAIN A COPY OF SDJ FOR CURRENT PROCEDURES. MR. MACDONALD WILL FORWARD YOUR PROPOSAL TO THE PER- MANENT EDITOR WHEN THAT INDIVIDUAL IS SELECTED. Articles should generally run from 1 to 5 pages in length though feature articles could run longer. We do use two-part articles so those can also run longer. We also accept "TIPS" as filler material. These may run anywhere from one paragraph to a half page. All submissions should be done in MS Word or a format that can be read in MS Word. All graphics should be neatly done and should be camera ready. Screen shots should be done in a 640 X 480 X 256 mode (no exceptions!) and should generally be full screen. All artwork should be saved as either PCX or BMP files both separately and embedded into the article itself where it is to appear in print. (We recommend PCX simply because it is more compact.) All such figures should include an appropriate caption that does not merely repeat what is in the surrounding text. All artwork and screenshots should be appropriate. Trivial screen shots will be deleted from the article. Articles should be submitted in ZIP form to the CompuServe address above. The ZIP file should include the DOC file as well all screenshots. Be absolutely sure to include your name at the top of your article. If this is your first submission, also include the following pieces of information: Full Name Mailing Address Social Security Number (if US address) Home and Work Phone Numbers Short Bio Also, if this is your first submission, try to send TWO publicity photos. One should be in black & white, the other should be in color. We recommend having a professional shoot this photo as he or she will be aware of the proper background, lighting, etc., necessary for magazine publication. Be SURE to write your name on the back of each picture. MAIL the pictures to: Sys-Con Publications Design and Production ATTN: SDJ Photos 890 Chestnut Ridge Road Chestnut Ridge, NY 10977 For questions on photos, call Jim Morgan at 914-426-5800. SDJ compensates writers at the rate of $75 - $100 per page depending on technical content, how well written, and so on. Writers who are considered to be "regulars" (frequent contributors) are compensated at the rate of $100 to $150 per page. A page is roughly an MS Word page at 10 pt text. Obviously, the number of screenshots will affect your page count. For a general idea, pick up a copy of SDJ. For a complimentary copy, call Sys-Con Publications at 800-513-7111 or fax your request to 914-735-3922. Also, visit our web page at http://sys-con.com. THIS IS A DRAFT OF THE GUIDELINES AND IS SUBJECT TO CHANGE. PLEASE BE SURE TO RETURN TO THE PLACE THAT YOU OBTAINED THIS IN A MONTH OR SO TO OBTAIN THE FINAL VERSION. Thank You, Michael D.
