This topic comes up regularly, and you can find a full discussion of it from about three weeks ago from a c.d.i. archive. A summary of the discussion: 1. You can back up multiple instances to a single tape, but the concensus is that you can't restore directly from a no-rewind device because of the way in which the restore utilities manipulate the tape. In order to restore from anything other than the first archive you would first have to dd the archive to another medium (disk or another tape). 2. One Solaris user had claimed that he had been able to get a restore from the second archive on a tape to work, but this is the only time I've seen this claimed, and didn't test his method myself so have no idea whether it's valid.
