To avoid problems with setup of different printers we usually send the output through a print filter that sets up the printer in a consistant manner so it can allways print the same number of lines per page independent on what particular printer we send the output to or how this printer is currently set up. A simple way of doing that is to make sure the standard Unix print filter for each printer sends a set of initialization codes to the printer before each file printed. We use a more sofisticated filter that can also set fonts and similar things from generic codes we print in 4GL.
