On our system (SunOS), I found that less, more and pg all correctly recognized the convention of setting the environment variable SHELL='' to disable banging out to the shell. However, the version of less on our system had a bug that dumped you out to /bin/sh if you requested help but the help file was missing. I think it was a pretty old version, around #120 or something like that. I don't know what the current version is, or if the bug has been fixed.
