Best way to set up Sun A1000 for raw Informix space?

Hello, I am going to be installing a Sun A1000 (initially with just four 36 gig disks) and I have a question for anybody familiar with the performance issues: We will be setting this up with Sun's Raid Manager into 2 gigabyte chunks for direct use by Informix, bypassing the Unix file system - Initially this will be RAID 0. My question is: Is there any performance difference in making a lot of 2 gigabye LUNs versus making some 14 (or so) gigabyte LUNs and then using the format utility to partition them into 2 gigabyte partitions ? Thanks for any help and advice. - Cedric - Sent via Deja.com http://www.deja.com/ Before you buy.
It should not make much difference either way. There MAY be a slight overhead to the extra layer of driver code triggered by finding a partition table on the logical drive but I doubt you could devise a test sensitive enough to detect its magnitude. BTW If you are planning on using Informix mirror with those RAID0 arrays I'd recommend using the SRM RAID1 to build mirrored pairs and RAID0 stripe them instead to create RAID10. It will be faster easier to manage, and a bit safer since you will not loose several chunks at a time when a single drive fails. (Indeed Informix will not even notice. If you are not, I'd STRONGLY recommend you get a second A1000 and plan on doing the RAID10 thing. Art S.
