Hello Informix Champions, We are planning to enhance our Informix 4gl version in Informix 5.0 to Informix-4GL version 7.2. If someone who has done this version enhancement then please share your experience in terms of effort and steps required in doing so. We have around 50 programs with a total of 50,000 lines of code in our application. I would love to know the approximate man hours for doing such a enhancement. Thanks in advance., Anil Khanna

If you are running OL5.xx I do not think that 4GL 7.20 will work. You may have to stick to 4GL 4.xx or upgrade your database engine to 7.xx. Jonathan can you comment? Art S. Kagel

There is little point in upgrading to I4GL 7.2 unless your server will also be upgraded to at least 7.2. You probably can get I4GL 7.2 to talk to a 5.x OnLine system, but you'd certainly need to be rather careful about the setup. I wouldn't bother; I'd upgrade to 7.2x or 7.3x. In terms of the migration effort, it should be basically painless, assuming you've got an automated build process. Basically, just recompile everything. It might take an hour or so to recompile your system, given that you've got 50 programs of about 1000 lines each. Which version of I4GL are you currently using (and don't say 5.0 because there is no such critter)? If you are using 4.10, you will probably have more work to do than if you're using I4GL 4.20. The majority of the effort will be in regression testing. The rest will be making modifications to the code as a result of problems found during the regression testing. Your biggest problem may be making sure your prepared statement and cursor names are unique across all the modules in each program - the dreaded bug number B31661 and its friends and family. Read the release notes carefully, especially about the CURSOR_NAME() function. -- Jonathan Leffler (jleffler@informix.com, jleffler@earthlink.net) Guardian of DBD::Informix v0.60 -- see http://www.perl.com/CPAN #include <disclaimer.h>
