First you should also include Java in your evaluation. ttgchicago@aol.com (Ttgchicago) wrote: :Hi all, : :Im thinking about writing a small (50 programs, 50 tables) I don't count 50 programs as a small application. Mid size perhaps. Do you realy mean 50 programs that do significant things? : windows based, :Client Server, Truly client/server. Do you intend to write applications on a server or simply let the database be the server and write client side code only? If you also need server based code non of the tools you mention can help you much. : ODBC application. Balancing cost and ease of use (learning :curve) vs. program performance (must be good!), what do people think of :using VB 4.0? Am I rediculous? If the application isn't too big VB 4.0 is ok. We use it an are successfull with it. : Should I go with Delphi or PB? Delphi is probably better than VB for most (not all) applications. (Delphi wheren't available when we first started development of our application. If it had been we would probably have used it.) I don't know enough about PB to realy comment on that, but aren't they rather expensive as well (something like New Era). : What do :you think? (BTW - NewEra is not an option. Too expensive for such a :small application!) Very unfortunate for Informix, and one of the reasons why it have never taken off. :Has anyone used VB along with Informix Online? Yes. : What kind of performance(load times/query times) should I expect? We have as good performance with VB as I would expect with any other tool. : What are the issues concerning :attaching/opening external tables and what kind of problems should I :expect to incur? You do *not* want to "attache" "external" tables. That sounds like you have been working with VB and MS Access. Forget about MS Access and use RDO or better yet ADO (I think it should be available by now, although we still use RDO). Check out the www.microsoft.com if you aren't familiar with these terms. I wouldn't expect any significant problems. You do of course have to be aware of the requirement for properly declared primary keys on every table, but that is the case for every type of development on RDMBS's. The only problem is that the MS tools will give you errors if you haven't done it right. (See reasent posts here in c.d.i on how to do it.) : :Thanx in advance!
