The main criterion is that the port of ODS must be identical between the two platforms. So if the hardware model and OS are not identical, but they are binary-compatible and run the same ODS port, then you can replicate between them (I would recommend bringing them both to the same version of OS, however). The amount of memory and disk, CPU speeds, etc, do not have to be identical, except that you must have all the same disk devices of sizes sufficient to make a copy of the original OnLine instance. HDR (which you are talking about) requires restoring an archive from the original system; that is why it appears to be "physical" rather than "logical". So you need all the chunks on the secondary system to be identical to the ones on the primary. For true "logical" replication, you need ER (Enterprise Replication), which, as has been pointed out already, is much more complex to set up.
