C-ISAM over NFS

(I'm new to this group; same message posted to comp.sys.hp.hpux some time ago) We use a software product which accesses C-ISAM files. The creator of this product claims that it is impossible to work over an NFS mounted filesystem. Informix claims that if NFS supports fcntl()/flock() then C-ISAM will work properly. HP's 'Highly Available NFS' (which we use) seems to support fcntl()/flock() with a limitation in the case of the NFS package moving to a new node. But still none of those companies wants to guarantee a correct working... Can anyone share his experience in this domain? TIA -- Arsene WALD, Luxembourg Europe)

There is even code in the file to detect NFS, but ... > Informix claims that if NFS supports fcntl()/flock() then C-ISAM will > work properly. ...that code is not active when fcntl() locking is used. > HP's 'Highly Available NFS' (which we use) seems to support > fcntl()/flock() with a limitation in the case of the NFS package moving > to a new node. > > But still none of those companies wants to guarantee a correct > working... Officially, that's the only stance Informix will take. There are moves afoot to get the official restriction lifted, but it hasn't happened yet. Until it happens, Informix's official stance will be 'not supported'. It will probably work, unless there are bugs in the NFS implementation. It will work slowly on the machine which uses the NFS mounted file system -- every lock call involves a trip across the network to the locking daemon, so don't expect it to be fast. > Can anyone share his experience in this domain? I've not tested it thoroughly, so I have no experience to offer. -- Yours, Jonathan Leffler (Jonathan.Leffler@Informix.com) #include <disclaimer.h> Guardian of DBD::Informix v1.00.PC1 -- http://www.perl.com/CPAN "I don't suffer from insanity; I enjoy every minute of it!"
