I shall investigate costs for both continuing on solaris and for linux. (my sysadmin can probably do linux better than solaris, as most of our other servers are linux). Understandable, but I stillm think that you may be underestimating the effort of ASCII-converting 30g of data on smallish servers ... <SNIP> What about a binary copy from the old server directly into the new one? You can do that with my dbcopy utility rather quickly. Faster than unload ascii data, copy ascii data, load ascii data for certain. Art, when you say binary, do you really mean binary? If so, then won't you have a bit of a problem if they go from Sparc to Opteron or to PA-RISC? >From what I've seen, the new 2.5" 10K SATA drives are yielding sub 5ms average seek times, and I think the 2.5" 15K SAS drives are around 2.5 ms avg seek time? If you're building a box from scratch, there are Adaptec Raid cards which will allow you to build out a SAS RAID and a SATA RAID in the same box using different raid types. (So you can do Raid 5,6, whatever for the OS and regular user space, and then RAID 10 on SAS for your database space. And you can fit 4 2.5" drives in a single 5" bay) (hot swappable) Ok, so I've been looking. BTW, Sun has a new box(s) that seem interesting. Saw a El Reg article on them. Starting price for the 2U high was around 3K (pretty bare bones) HTH -G _________________________________________________________________ Get thousands of games on your PC, your mobile phone, and the web with Windows®. http://clk.atdmt.com/MRT/go/108588800/direct/01/
