PIT Recovery
Posted in 2011
A user on IDS 11.50 (Solaris) asked how to do point-in-time recovery and which backup methods support it. Art Kagel replied that only onbar provides true PIT restore (rolling forward to a specified moment); ontape can only approximate it, since you can stop after restoring a given logical log archive file. Onbar needs a storage manager (Veritas, etc., or the bundled but fiddly ISM) — see the Backup and Restore guide; no simpler guide was offered. On whether external/snapshot backups support PIT, Art said no, while Stuart McCann said yes, via 'onbar -r -e -t'. The contradiction is left unresolved.

Hi, We are using IDS 11.50 FC6 & FC7 on Solaris Sparc. How can we make sure that we perform PIT Recovery in Informix? What are the different backup technologies available that supports PIT ? Thanks.
Only the onbar utility supports true point in time recovery. You can
simulate a PIT restore using ontape, but the resolution is the point at
which each logical log file was closed and archived. During an ontape
restore you can stop rolling forward logical logs after restoring any single
logical log archive file (which could contain a single log or multiple
logical logs). This is not the same as the full PIT restore capability of
the onbar utility to which you can specify the moment to which you want to
roll forward and it will properly restore only logical log records written
up to that moment before beginning recovery.

Thanks for the information.
Can you also guide me how to use (backup/re-store) using onbar process.
Thanks.
See the Backup and Restore guide. Onbar works with a storage manager like
IBM Tuxedo, Veritas, etc. but it does come with a simple storage manager
known as ISM. Instructions for setting up ISM are included in the docs, it
is more complex than using ontape.

Yeh, that's why i asked for some simple solution, as its quite complex in doc's. If there is any simple guide then do let me know. Thanks.
one more thing to ask. Can we achieve PIT using external backups as well, like snapshot?
