Installing Informix 11.5 on Redhat
Posted in 2017
A SQL Server DBA tried installing Informix 11.50 on Red Hat; ./ids_install printed "Initializing InstallShield Wizard..." and dropped straight back to the shell. Respondents blamed the InstallShield/JRE combination — it picks up an installed OpenJDK instead of its bundled JRE — and suggested using -console, pointing -javahome at an Oracle JDK, a simple PS1 prompt, and adequate /tmp space (plus upgrading to 12.10). David gave concrete steps: yum install the Oracle jdk-7u80 RPM, add compat-libstdc++-33 and glibc.i686 from the optional repo, create the informix user/group, then run ./ids_install -gui -javahome /usr/java/jdk1.7.0_80/jre. The poster never confirmed success in the thread.

Hi, I am trying for the first time to install Informix 11.5 on Redhat. I moved the files into /opt/Informix When I type ./ids_install It asks me if I want to use the gui, I say no, and then it says "Initializing InstallShield Wizard....." and then it kicks out to the shell command prompt. Any ideas on that?
The 11.50 installer had some problems, mainly with the JRE it used. I would error out if the installed JRE wasn't the Sun/Oracle JRE but rather the open source JRE which is what's usually installed on RH. Why not just install the latest and greatest version 12.10.FC8W1? The installer was fixed and it is a better version with lots more features and bug fixes. Note that v11.50 will be going out-of-support in September 2018. Art Art S. Hi, we took over an 11.5FC6, and I am trying to get up to speed on Informix. I'm a sql server DBA. I took a 4 day course but of course, it didn't cover installation. We had our server guys spin up a red hat server and I have found a free developers version on the IBM website. So I don't know much about what I'm doing but should I tell the server guys that we need the java runtime installed? Is there something particular that I can tell them that they would say, ok, I know what it needs?
The installer actually contains a compatible JRE, but, and here's the biggest problem, if it senses an installed JRE it will try to use that instead. Adding the following argument sometimes resolves the problem: -jave-home=<path to java jre installation> -console Here's a link to Lester Knutsen's Webcast recording where he covers installing and configuring Informix: https://youtu.be/vbMPpA2kmcs And here's one ADTC's Tom Beebe did a year or two ago on the same subject, but a bit more basic: https://youtu.be/9X2o0OmA8MU You can see all of the Advanced Datatools Webcast recordings here: http://www.advancedatatools.com/Informix/Webcasts.html Art Art S. http://www.smooth1.co.uk/installs/dbinstalls.html#5.1.3 For 11.5 in text mode it would be ./ids_install -console https://www.ibm.com/support/knowledgecenter/en/SSGU8G_11.50.0/com.ibm.igul.doc/i ds_in_014x.htm Regards, David. > On 02 March 2017 at 20:35 Art Kagel <art.kagel@gmail.com> wrote: > > > The installer actually contains a compatible JRE, but, and here's the > biggest problem, if it senses an installed JRE it will try to use that > instead. Hi Benji, There are a several problems I have found with InstallShield.. Often time the best way to find an answer is Google InstallShield with the error you have. There should be a log file that will have more details in /tmp or in the home directory but often that is not helpful. 1. Need to get it to use the right version of Jave. Download the Jave SDK, not just the runtime as I have problems with using the runtime and make sure it is first in your PATH. 2. Certain special characters in the users prompt will cause Java to error out. Try export PS1="$" to get a simple prompt. 3. Not enough temp space, it needs writable temp space in /tmp or exporting ISTEMP_HOME=/folder to some folder that the user doing the install has right permissions. I did a Webcast last month demoing an install, 2ed one on this page, "Best Practices for Getting Started with Informix by Lester Knutsen" at http://advancedatatools.com/Informix/Webcasts.html Are you doing the install as root? Hi, thanks for the information guys. I will chip away at your advice and watch the webinars over the next few days and report back on what I find
Hi Lester, do you know the URL of the java I need to download, or what I need to search for to find it? Also, where does the java need to be installed to on the server? Thanks Benji
I think you must use java 1.5 (not openjdk) Regards -- Saludos Cordiales Rubén APLEXT AX ERP & TIC www.aplext.com Fono: 2493452 Quito Ecuador On Wed, 2017-03-15 at 09:20 -0400, BENJI LONG wrote: > Hi Lester, do you know the URL of the java I need to download, or what I need > to search for to find it? Hi, what does this command do to help me? I am trying to figure out what I need to download for java? JRE? JDK? OPENJDK and what version? Once I get that on the server, do I run your command to actually install the file I downloaded? Thanks Benji
Assuming you have a redhat repository config'd it will download and install java for you Cheers Paul -----Original Message----- From: ids-bounces@iiug.org [mailto:ids-bounces@iiug.org] On Behalf Of BENJI LONG Sent: Wednesday, March 15, 2017 9:28 AM To: ids@iiug.org Subject: Re: RE: Installing Informix 11.5 on Redhat [38766] Hi, what does this command do to help me? Ok, thanks for the information. We don't have that. This is a virtual machine that had a very basic Linux installation from what I have been told. So I downloaded the Oracle SDK version 7. I have no idea where I need to install it to. Our unix admins are no help. She said it isn't the java version for linux, so I was the one who had to install it...nice
Hi You can find the correct version of java for redhat in www.rpmfind.net rpm.pbone.net Regards -- Saludos Cordiales Rubén APLEXT AX ERP & TIC www.aplext.com Fono: 2493452 Quito Ecuador On Wed, 2017-03-15 at 12:30 -0400, BENJI LONG wrote: > Ok, thanks for the information. Hi, If you downloaded the rpm version (jdk-7u80-linux-x64.rpm) this can be installed with yum install /root/Downloads/jdk-7u80-linux-x64.rpm You also need to add some packages which are not in the default Redhat Developer image: yum repolist all | grep optional yum-config-manager --enable rhel-7-server-optional-rpms yum whatprovides "*/libstdc++.so.5" yum install compat-libstdc++-33-3.2.3-72.el7.x86_64 -y yum install glibc.i686 -y yum update Also I would create the group and user informix including setting the password for informix before the install: groupadd informix useradd informix -g informix passwd informix # enter password Finally install with: ./ids_install -gui -javahome /usr/java/jdk1.7.0_80/jre I have added full instructions for this setup to my Database product installation FAQ Redhat 7.3 Developer Setup - http://smooth1.co.uk/installs/dbinstalls.html#2.6 Informix 11.50.FC9 - http://smooth1.co.uk/installs/dbinstalls.html#7.1.1 Regards, David. > On 15 March 2017 at 16:30 BENJI LONG <ruggedmouse@hotmail.com> wrote: > > > Ok, thanks for the information.
