Informix marketing... or lack of!!!!
Posted in 2000
Not a technical problem: a user complains that Oracle ads are everywhere (e.g. during NBA playoffs) while Informix seems invisible, worrying that CIOs forget Informix exists. Replies are mostly jokes about Informix's "stealth marketing" (Area 51, Prohibition-style sales), but one poster notes Informix did launch a new campaign in 2000, including a full-page Wall Street Journal ad, with more promised, and argues the WSJ targets CEO/CIO readers better than TV. Another points to an interview with Jean-Yves Dexmier on Ron Flannery's informixhandbook.com discussing the marketing effort. No technical resolution; it's opinion and speculation only.

i have been watching the NBA playoffs and i must say i am tired of seeing the Oracle commercial during every break. Does Informix have plans to let the world know that they are still around? maybe its time to start learning about Oracle... maybe that is why CIOs and CEOs choose the other product... they have forgotten that there is another option out there, called Informix. maybe they have a grand master plan in the works... you think... maybe... perhaps... hopefully...

That is a more mysterious subject than any piece of Informix software. Informix sales are kind of run on the "Prohibition era speakeasy" model. My (non-serious) theory is that Informix has been secretly bought out by Larry Ellison, and that he wants to keep it around so he won't have to face Federal anti-trust action, but that he doesn't want it to take too much market share.
The last I heard, Informix marketing was based out of Area-51 :-) S.W. My sales rep says it best: Informix has the best "stealth marketing" machine in the business... Informix did start a new marketing campaign this year. There was a full page ad in the Wall Street Journal recently. They say there will be more. There does seem to be a master plan. The current management is aware of the weaknesses of the past. Ask those who were at the Forum 2000 in DC a couple of months ago... ... and I must say that the Wall Street Journal is probably a better medium if you are targeting the CEO/CIO types than the NBA playoffs on TV. I must admit that sometimes I do get a little envious of Oracle's advertising budget myself!!!. Also check out Ron Flanagan's interview with Dexmier at his book's Web site: www.informixhandbook.com, Jean addresses the new marketing effort (ahum). Art S.
