Table Alteration -- Assert failure -- SQL Error 710

Hello friends, After altering a table (adding/removing fields) do you suggest me to do following steps : update stats low/medium/high for the table update stats for procedures compile programs accessing that table I am thinking to do the above steps as last time when I did the alteration I got a Assert Failure. I also got the SQL Error 710 : table tab-name has been dropped, altered or renamed. The server came offline automatically and was fine after bringing it online again. I think this may be caused because of the alter-in-place. What do you say on this?
