Re: Informix versus oracle

As one who is 80% Informix and 20% Oracle, the basic architectures and concepts are extremely similar except some of the terminology differs (e.g. Informix and Oracle have different meanings of the word "tablespace"). The main *differences* as I see it lie in the tools and utilities used to administer the server. In Oracle *almost everything* is done through SQL (subject to any tools interfacing to it). Informix has a mixture of SQL and command-line utilities. OEM (Oracle Enterprise Manager) really is rather good, Informix ISA and Server Studio are still catching up IMHO. Oracle tends to have more options and permutations for things than Informix but in my experience these can merely confuse things and make it a harder product to administer. Can't remember whether Oracle allows you do do backups with users all still fully on-line but I think Informix is / was several years ahead on that one. The Informix client-server connectivity stuff is considerably less unfriendly than the Oracle equivalents. That's all I can think of for now. Is this true??? Oracle can't support on-line backup!!!! Sounds ridiculous to me. The problem is, in this newsgroup, lot of anti oracle claims have to be taken with a handful of the needful. rk-
