RE: Network driver cannot bind a name to the port.
Posted in 2000
You are just trying to connect to an already running database, correct?
Where is the database running?
This may sound a little odd.
My understanding of how this error comes up is as follows.
When you decide to bind a socket you specify two things.
1. The interface you want to bind on.(I believe this is by IP address)
2. The port you want to bind on.(Or you specify I dont care what port I get)
3. The protocol type you are using.
Reasons I have seen for failure.
1. The interface I tried to bind to does not exist on this box.
2. The port number you want to bind to is not available.
I have seen cases where the DNS was screwed up, and the database
could not come up because when he tried to start his network listener
he couldnt bind to an inteface which did not exist.
This might apply to the situation you are in.
Hope this helps,
Will
