SET ROLE

Greetings, I have noticed that each execution of the SET ROLE command causes 2 x sequential scans of SYSROLEAUTH on our system. This is quite costly as there are > 40k in the table. It is indexed & I have run update stats - but it still scans. Can anyone shed some light on this for me ? What exactly does SET ROLE do under the covers ? And why should it scan SYSROLEAUTH ?
