RE: ontape restore to new storage problem

Hi Roger,
I did this once by using informix mirroring.
If the new storage is on the same server this would be very easy.
First create a directory that has symbolic links to your new locations.
Use onspaces or onmonitor to mirror a chunk. Once the chunk is mirrored
you can bring the old chunk offline.
This option will still keep your system online without disruption to
your users.

Hello , my box ids 7.31 like to switch all dbspace&chunks to a new
storage. Unfortunatelly , all chunks set to direct device name(not link
name). How could I migrate all db to new storage by ontape safely and
quickly?
I would rather not consider dbexport/dbimport or unload/load.
It take too long to finish and unstable .

Hi Chris,
I suggest a little test first. Create 2 small locations on your server
with symbolic links to each eg:
lrwxrwxrwx 1 informix informix 50 Oct 18 14:28 sde ->
/dev/rdsk/c1t0d0s5
lrwxrwxrwx 1 informix informix 50 Oct 18 14:28 sde_m ->
/dev/rdsk/c1t9d0s3
using the command:
ln -s /dev/rdsk/c1t0d0s5 sde
don't forget your permissions: I only use raw partitions for IDS and
this example follows that.
Add just the first chunk to IDS.
Once it is added, mirror the chunk and then proceed to remove the first
chunk.
You can run the following to remove:
onspaces -d <dbspacename> -p /usr/informix/sde -o 0 -y
The /usr/informix/sde is an example of the path I used above to set the
link sde:
lrwxrwxrwx 1 informix informix 50 Oct 18 14:28 sde ->
/dev/rdsk/c1t0d0s5
The IDS server will prompt for an ontape backup once you remove the
chunk and you can change your TAPEDEV parameter to /dev/null to perform
a 2 second backup to nothing without shutting down IDS. Use onmonitor
option to change this parameter to /dev/null and back to your tape
device after the backup.
Your IDS server will now have sde_m as the reference to your dbspace.
I would suggest you test this on a test server before attempting this on
a live environment. It might be familiar to an experienced DBA but you
could make a major messup if you do something wrong.
Once you complete this, start a backup with the correct backup
parameters.
My 3TB database takes almost 23 hours to backup, so the weekend is a
good time to get it done.
Note that when mirroring, the mirrored chunk will take some time to
build as it gets replicated exactly as the primary.
Good luck, Chaos
