Architcture question
Posted in 2008
The poster asked how to architect an internet-facing app+database box on Linux: whether to run IDS under Xen (SuSE dom0/domU) or in dom0, and how to lay out chunks on just two mirrored disks. One respondent saw no benefit in virtualizing the database, suggesting OS plus temp/index dbspaces on one disk and data dbspaces on the other; once the poster explained the goal was isolating the web tier for security, the advice was to run the web part in a VM and IDS on the core system with mirrored disks. An IBM developer added that IDS 11.10 was tested on Xen 3.0/SLES 10.1 with no problems for KAIO, raw devices, direct I/O, no-aging and processor affinity, and no noticeable performance difference between dom0 and a VM, pointing to a German presentation and a promised developerWorks article.

Hi, For a customer, I need to set a complete app & database server, exposed to the world, on a Linux. The machine is pretty powerful and I was thinking of using Xen for virtualization. . Has anyone experienced IDS over Xen? I would certainly stick to SuSE for both Dom0 and the DomU. . Would it make more sense to have IDS in the Dom0? . When it comes to disk, the machine has 2 disks, which we a were planning to use as RAID. What would be your recommendation regarding chunks? Thanks! jgp
I see no reason to virtualize the whole thing. Especially when you want to run mirrored discs, you will gain nothing in speed. With no virtual stuff, I would recommend / with the SuSE filesystems on first disc, tmpdbs and indexdbs for ids (to be discussed so, depending how heavy the tmp/index load is), and the second disc for datadbs. Better is a 6 Disc System (3x2 mirrored, to get the ids stuff separeted form SuSE. regards Joerg Volz ________________________________ Von: ids-bounces@iiug.org im Auftrag von Jean Georges Perrin Gesendet: Fr 22.02.2008 11:19 An: ids@iiug.org Betreff: Architcture question [11381] Hi, For a customer, I need to set a complete app & database server, exposed to the world, on a Linux. The idea of vitualization would be to have an additional security layer: the web part would run in its VM, while the DB is eventually running in another VM or on the core system. In this case I would prefer the second option: running the Web Part in a VM, IDS on the core system together with mirrored discs. regards, Joerg ________________________________ Von: ids-bounces@iiug.org im Auftrag von Jean Georges Perrin Gesendet: Fr 22.02.2008 12:59 An: ids@iiug.org Betreff: RE: Architcture question [11384] The idea of vitualization would be to have an additional security layer: the web part would run in its VM, while the DB is eventually running in another VM or on the core system. Hi, we've tested basic functionality of IDS 11.10 running in a VM of XEN hypervisor 3.0 (SLES 10.1). During this testing we did not find any problems with OS specific functionality used by IDS: KAIO, raw devices, Direct IO, No Aging, Processor Affinity. Apart from that we did not find any other issues. Although these tests were not (and were not intended to be) performance tests in any way, we could not see any real performance difference between IDS running on dom0 and IDS running in a VM. But to really 'prove' this, we will have to do much more (performance specific) testing. Jean Geroges, you can read German, right? So you can see a presentation that I did recently for a workshop of the German IUG: http://www.iug.de/workshop/workshop2008/47wsmuenchen/Vortraege/Fuerderer_Martin. pdf It's in German only ... :-( Currently this is all I have and can say regarding IDS and XEN. More will follow (like a developerWorks article, in English), but it will take some time. You mean the Pretzel? Historically Lye-Pretzels and other baked things coated with the alakaline solution (the solution is responsible for taste and the brown colour) are mostly found in southern Germany (Baden, Wuerttemberg, Bavaria). If you find them in somewhere else and dig deep, you will almost find that the one starting with lye baked stuff was from southern Germany. But: Martins translation tools are only valid until noon, the bavarians say: "A white sausage should never here the 12 AM bells ringing!".
