Then you might be able to break the select into 2 parts, with the first part, the part that needed the temp table, inserting its results into xyz, and the the second part extracting the data from xyz, and outputing it to the report. Again, this depends on being able to split the select up in an appropriate way; 'set explain on' might help you figure out what part of the select requires the temp table.
