DHL use Turbo and Online engines around the world. These have a restriction on the size of temporary tables created by all SELECT statements. This is because the default extent size is only 16 pages which produces limits of 3500 pages on turbo and 8200 pages on online. Online is better because every 64 extents it doubles the size of the next 64 extents but the limit of approx 200 extents remains. I have a 2.5 million row table from which I am trying to produce a 4gl report. It fails, of course, because the temporary table built runs out of extents. I know of only one way to get round this problem which is to write the program so that it only selects portions of the table at a time producing seperate 4gl reports from the report function and 'cat's these into the same unix file. Any totalling required across these sections must be handled manually and printed through a seperate report function again 'cat'ing to the end of the unix file. For various reasons this is not the best solution for me, does anyone have any better ones. I did think of just selecting the rowids off the table in the order required and then selecting the row information within the 'on every row' section of the report function. This would mean not being able to use the before and after group statements but this could be handled within the 'on every row'. Has anyone tried this method? Does it work?
