Hi,
I'm now restoring an Informix-database (IDS 7.30 on NT 4.0) using ontape -r.
Backuptime : 2 hours (ontape -s)
Any idea how long my restore (ontape -r) will take ?

Physical restore - the same time. Logical restore - depends on your system
activity after backup.

Since reading tapes and writing to disk is usually faster than the reverse
figure about 75% of the backup time as a rule of thumb. You can get a
better estimate by factoring your tape unit's transfer rate against the
number of full pages in the server at the time of the archive. This is of
course just for the physical restore, restoring and rolling the logical logs
will add a noticable period to the restore dependant upon the level of
activity since the archive to the point you want to restore to, the
granularity of your logical log backup (ie if you backup single logs using
an ALARMPROGRAM script/program you can restore to the nearest
logical log if ontape -c was used you can restore the the last completed
log tape), and the size of any uncompleted transactions on the log tapes
that might have to be rolled back at the end of the restore. This logical
restore can be very quick or it may take longer than the physical restore.
If you do NOT restore any logical logs, or if you restore only some, be
sure to bring the engine to fully online mode before shutting it down or
all of the chunks will be in an inconsistent state and you will have to start
the entire restore over again.
