Duplicating an instance on the same box

Anyone have an opinion on the best method to duplicate a 70gig instance on the same box? Onbar works well for duplicating an instance on a different box but doesn't work for the same box. Thoughts? Thanks Sent via Deja.com http://www.deja.com/
Hi, You can do it with Onbar as well. You need the tool tbmvchunk from Informix. (Free of charge?) You have to set up a group of raw devices for the copy database exactly like those of the primary system. Shut down the primary system and relink your raw devices. Then restore the last backup on the new raw devices. Then you have to patch the reserved pages of the copy database with the tbmvchunk utility to change the paths. This tool has been developed by Informix exactly to do this. Now you can relink the raw devices of both systems to their different entry paths. At this moment you can start the primary system again. (End of production fall-out.) Adapt Onconfig and all the environment for the copy-system and you have it: a duplicated instance on the same box. We have done it several times. It is a fast method if your database is "big enough" (> 50 GB), while with any of the export/import methods you waste probably more time. You're right, it is not documented but it does exist. I spoke with Informix about it at length. They just won't give it to me. It would be a very nice tool to have too. It seems it was a utility built specifically for SAP (even though it is not SAP dependent), and only SAP can supply it. In fact, SAP has to supply a key for you to use each time you wish to use it. The escalation manager at Informix whom I spoke with said he would enter it as a 'New Product' request. So we'll see how far that gets.
