Hi Mark,
First, you can invoke the ontape -c command from every program. There
are different messages send by ontape. I think all messages are
written to "stdout" and all input is read from "stdin". Try to call
ontape from the command line with a very small LTAPESIZE (10MB).
Backup your system and then you will see the message that you can scan
for.
Second, it must be possible to find out, in what dbspaces the log files
are. I didn't test it, but look at the syslogfil table in your sysmaster
database. Maybe it's the first 12 bit of the physloc column ?

PS: Although it's not supported by Informix, I always use a named pipe
as a tape device for ontape. Then it's up to me to write all the data
to the tape device. Using this way it would be easy to know, when the
tape becomes full.
