[...other comments deleted...] I have found it useful to consider the role of a Data Administrator, whose job is to ensure the integrity of the data itself, as opposed to the daily running of the engine. (There was once a mailing list devoted to this topic, and there may still be.) Among the duties of the DA are: Validating and documenting the relationships between data entities, and between individual rows of data. Tracing and documenting the history of the data. In a warehousing environment, this is called metadata (information about the data) but it applies to all databases. Planning for the long-term data needs of the company. What to do with data that is required for legal reasons but is too voluminous to store online? Often the DBA is too busy fighting fires to give proper attention to these issues. There is obvious overlap between the DBA and DA functions, as there is between the DBA and sysadmin. These roles require close coordination and definition in order to be of use. As in any naming scheme, the goal is communication. The act of discussion and the arrival at consensus among the concerned parties in order to achieve the business goals of the company is what this is all about. Using other people's labels can provide a good starting point, but each member must still achieve understanding through long and patient communication.
