Re: How i can create a RAW disk device in Windows NT 4.0?

I wouldn't recommend it, and it has been discouraged by many. Your performance doesn't increase on NT with raw partitions, and you increase your risk with an operating system that doesn't have much technical support in this area. Who will you call to get things fixed if you have problems? Microsoft? They support SQL-Server raw partitions, but do they support Informix? If your data is important, stick with the cooked file approach. You can make easy backups of the dbspaces, and recovery is a lot easier. If performance matters with NT, it will hit a wall, no matter how much hardware you throw at it, and I'm talking multi-CPU, etc. If you want speed, reliability, simplicity, and lower risk, switch to UNIX. And in the case of newer operating systems you'll be able to use IDS on Linux very soon. For NT, simple is best. Stick to cooked files, accept the fact that NT is a pooch, and think about a different OS for a server. :-) Thanks, Tim "Luis A.
