Oninit -w
Posted in 2015
User asked what the "-w" flag means when seeing multiple "oninit -w" processes. Experts explained that "-w" makes oninit wait until the database engine is fully online before returning control, with a default 600-second timeout. This flag is typically set in startup scripts to ensure dependent services don't start prematurely. The flag can be customized with a timeout value like "oninit -w 900".

Hello,
When I do: ps -eaf | grep oninit
I got many "oninit -w"
What does "-w" mean? and how do we get this type of flags?
Os: Red Hat 6.7
IDS: 11.70.FC8
Thank you!
Kern
It is a 'delay' start - basically oninit doesn't return to command line until
fully online. Without it oninit will continue some background processing and
will not be available. Useful if you are scripting things and need to ensure
the engine is up and ready for the next command
Cheers

Just to add to Paul's description: Look in your startup scripts in
/etc/rc.d or /etc/init.d. The Informix startup script is passing -w so
that the startup script waits until the engine is fully online before
exiting and allowing the next startup script in line to execute. That way
app servers and other startups that depend on the Informix engine being
available will not fail if something delays the Informix startup.

Thank you Paul. It's interesting that the instance has been up for 7 days and
seems to be fully online, I say this because it says "On-line" and it's
operational with many active transactions...

Just to clarify even a little more.
oninit -w only wait for 600 seconds for the engine to be "online" beforeeither returning OK or an ERROR. If used with oninit -iwy, then it will
wait for all system database to be successfully created and the engine
online. This is especially nice when write scripts to init a system.
If after the end of 600 seconds this is not fully functional then it will
return an error. If you do not like the 600 second time-out then you may
specify a time, oninit -w 900

The ps will just reflect the passed flags at startup
