In all 6.0 and higher releases, the connectivity tools have been bundled in with the engine and related tools such as ESQL/C. The following rule holds for pre-6.0 engines, wherever you have a Online server, you should also have a copy of Istar running. Any workstation which you wish to connect to that remote server should have Inet running, along with the tool, ie. ESQL/C. To reiterate, if you have two Online servers on different machines and you want them to connect to each other, they both need their own copy of Istar running. Any box without a server would need Inet, to be able to connect. I completely understand your confusion. Some sales reps are talking a 6.0 configuration (where Istar and Inet no longer exist as separate entities), when they really should be explaining the configuration I've mentioned above. I hope this clears up your confusion! Sincerely, Tracy W. Nedd National Weather Service - DBA vball@skipper.ssmc.noaa.gov p.s. We have a setup where the clients have runtime versions of Esql/c and Inet. The server has development versions of Online, Istar and Esql/c. This was a less expensive setup, and since the only new development was being done on the server, it works just fine.
