Regardless of whether its Fourgen or any other 4GL application, 4.1 4GL *does not* use the correct protocol to communicate to a 7.1 engine. (7.1 communication libraries have been changed). So, to get a 4.1 application to talk to a 7.1 engine, it *must* go through a relay module which translates 4.1 calls to compatible 7.1 calls. If the 4GL application is recompiled using 6.0 4GL, then the new and improved communication libraries are compiled into the code, making it possible for the application to communicate directly with 7.1 engines (look ma, no relay module!). This option will give the best performance. >On a related subject, as another possibility, could I run two engines on >the server, using my current 5.02 engine as the production server for my >Fourgen and custom apps, and run a 7.1 online in another INFORMIXDIR as a >development and testing environment until I can get everything migrated? You can run both engines, however to run a single set of 4GL executables, you must use 4.1----->5.0 and 4.1-----relay module------>7.1. Otherwise, you will have to have two sets of executables, one compiled under 4.1, and the other compiled under 6.0. Enjoy, J. Dority Seattle
