It's not the physical log size that needs changing. The logical log
volume in the server needs to big enough to accommodate 1.8 million
times the total record size of the table * 3, plus an overhead of about
24 bytes per record. Currently your table is 240Mb, after the change it
shouldn't be much bigger, so you will need at least 720Mb of logical log
space, but I would suggest at least 50 logs of 2000k. The physical log
size might need to be bigger, it depends on how often you are doing this
change, and how frequently you checkpoint, but that's another issue.

I tried setting logging to unbuffered logging via ontape and updating
the table but I got the same error: -458 Long transaction aborted.
I am trying to update a field in the table from a Char(50) to a
VarChar(250). Any help is appreciated.
