Archecker question
Posted in 2012
Asked whether archecker table-level restores from ON-Bar backups (IDS 11.70 on Solaris) must run on the source instance or can be run elsewhere. Answer: archecker can run on any compatible machine, and running it on a non-production server is the recommended approach; if run on the source instance, just direct the extracted data into a different table so the original isn't touched. Follow-up questions about which config/ixbar files to copy were answered only by a pointer to the Backup and Restore Guide, plus confirmation that the usual ON-Bar restore environment variables are needed.

This is a general question about archecker.
I want to recover a table using onbar from 5 different daily backups to see
the state of it at a certain time. So far so good. Do I have to issue the
archecker command from the server / instance the backup was taken from or can
I do this from any server? I would prefer to run the command from a
non-production server if possible. I assume even though the source file is
described the content of the table will not be affected in any way if I do run
it from the source instance / database?

Yes you can run it from other instance and that woul be my suggestion...

okay thanks for the quick answer. What files do I need to copy and/or
environment variables do I need to set to enable the process to work from a
different server/instance?

You can run the archecker on any compatible machine, not just the source.
The data extraction procedure lets you specify what to do with the data.
If you run it on the source machine with INFORMIXSERVER pointed to the
source instance, you just have to be careful to specify that the data be
inserted into a different table than the source table for this experiment.

Art,
Thanks for the information. However a supplimental question if you please? I
would rather perform the restore on a non-production server using onbar. What
configuration files, ixbar files etc etc do I need to copy over so onbar knows
what to look for?

This is documented in the Backup and Restore Guide more fully than I could
treat it here.

One last question about archecker and onbar. To use onbar and the archecker do
I need to set the same environment variables as I would if I was going to
restore an onbar backup?
Thanks
