olsoctcp versus tcp

We are running Informix 5.02.UC1 backend with ISQL 4.11.UC1 and
I-Net 5.02.UC6 on a Sparc Station 5, and we have an sqlhosts file configured
as follows:
.
.
.
myengine tcp mymach star1
myengineol olsoctcp mymach star1
When we run the following
begin work;
insert into mydb@myengine:mytable
values(0, "abc", "abc", "abc", "n", "ab" ); commit work;
the process hangs, but when we run
begin work;
insert into mydb@myengineol:mytable
values(0, "abc", "abc", "abc", "n", "ab" ); commit work;
it completes successfully.
Can anyone explain why this happens? Any words of wisdom on the
difference between olsoctcp and tcp? Would it be save to change the tcp
to olsoctcp (there are other applications currently running the machine
and accessing the databases via this alias.)
