HP-UX 10.20/IDS7.30UC crashes machine
Answered: green (hollow confidence) — Original asker confirms the machine stopped crashing after installing all recommended HP-UX patches (an engine upgrade to 7.30UC6 alone did not help), matching an earlier suggestion from another list member; asker himself hedges that another simultaneous change might also be responsible.

Hello,
we have some problems with the following configuration:
HP-UX 10.20
IDS7.30UC
cooked files on a RAID-LEVEL-5
We initialized (oninit -i) the online system and added some dbspaces.
But now we have a big problem after startup (oninit).
After typing oninit (between 0 seconds and a few minutes) the machine
hangs and do a automatic reboot. Is this a known problem? Some ideas to
fix this problem?
Connection-Modes: onipcshm, onipcstr
dbspace list
./nifx/d0/root.000 250MB rootdbs
./nifx/d0/temp0.000 250MB tempdbs1
./nifx/d1/log.000 100MB logdbs
./nifx/d2/data.000 500MB datadbs (chunk 0)
./nifx/d3/data.001 250MB datadbs (chunk 1)
Thank you, Volker

Hi,

Well - it's elimination time.
Start by eliminating ipcstr. The strings interface is a newer feature on both
HP and Informix.
Next - check your memory utilization. Since this is happening after booting
the system and you are bringing the engine online, I'm guessing that as you are
getting shared memory segments that you are possibably running into a memory
issue.
Next - eliminate KAIO. KAIO requires that the memory segments be pinned in
memory while the IO is underway. It's possible that HP is allowing the address
to be paged and getting into trouble because the physical memory address is not
there when the IO completes.
If eliminating KAIO works, then you might try to make the shared memory
segments resident.

Hallo Volker, we had similar problems on HP-UX lately. We changed to 7.30.UC5 and !!!! got all HP UX Patches onto the system and - without knowing why - the symptoms you described disappeared. Klaus Nonne nsi001@aol.com
Hello, here is the solution for my descibed problem. First, we installed IDS 7.30UC6; nothing happened; means the machine continues crashing Second, we installed all recommended patches (HP-UX); what a surprise: our machine stops crashing.
