Access problems with datetime fields
Posted in 1997
Nils, I'm curious. Do you experience any problems using Access to update
datetime fields? We
have a timestamp as the last column in many of our tables, and this
defaults to the current date fine
in an insert. But if we try to update any field in the record after the
datetime has been filled, the
system gives an error that the record is already being updated by another
user. Has anyone
else seen this, or know a work around?
We are currently changing the fields to date when we need to use Access for
updates, then
restoring them later. All of this is for setting up test data in
development environments.
But dbaccess can easily be run as a command line tool and execute
arbitrary sql statements.
Of course it has problems with line wrapping (which it doesn't do at
all) so a better tool might be nice.
By the way I use MS Access for the purpose of checking the database.
That's the best tool I have found so far, and you will be hard put to
find anything better. Issue an SQL statement, see the results in a
grid, no "line wrapping" - but horizontal scrolling to any number of
columns, multiple query results simultaneously on screen, change any
data you want interactively in the grid (for one table selects that
includes the primary key) and many other greate features.

:Being a recent convert to Informix I was stunned to find that there is
:_NO_ command line SQL tool! All that is available is in dbaccess
:through some stupid menu driven interface! ACK! Both Oracle and
:Ingres (the dbs I have used for years) have a purely command driven
:interface which I find incredably usefull for diagnosing nasty
:database integrity problems. This is very annoying as the results of
:a previous query are always trashed every time I run a subsequent one
:and it refuses to understand even the simplest window size changes. I
:_like_ being able to make my x-window take the entire screen and see n
:rows in columnar format spreading _across_ the screen! If the lines
:wrap, I just re-issue the query with fewer fields or n times with few
:enough to fit, my choice if I don't want a wrap.

:Sorry, end of bitch.

:Anyway, I am now writing a tool for this, if anyone likes I will post
:the source to the group or on my web page when I am done.
