Process in Unix does not die after 4gl program ends

Hi, I've got this problem cropping up about once a week since I converted all our isql reports and forms to 4gl. One of my users will tell me that they are not running any 4gl applications but when they do a 'ps', they see a 'sqlexec' run-away process. The times of the processes when caught range from 600 to 1000 minutes. What I just do is do a 'kill -9 [process#]' on it. My questions are: 1) How come this is happening after I converted the apps from isql to 4gl? 2) How can I avoid this problem? (cannot reconvert back to isql because next machine we'll be getting will have the engine and i4gl only.) System: AT&T 3B2/522 running sysV3.2.1 Isql: 4.00.UD2 I4gl: 4.00.UH2 Engine: (I assume 4.00 too [How does one know the SE version?]) Please e-mail. Thanks!
