Experience with OBJECTIVITY?
Posted in 1993
We're currently using Informix and Sybase for a variety of projects. Given the trends to Object - Oriented Everything, I've decided to investigate Objectivity. I'd appreciate the experiences people might have with this database system. Some questions I have: 1). Inter-operability with existing Sybase/Informix databases. 2). Development environments - our people have a variety of C++/ Object-Oriented training, with the number of real experts fairly limited. How much of a problem is this?? How easy is it to design your application and create the appropriate objects? 3). Overall performance - I've heard that Object - oriented databases have performance problems. How does Objectivity compare to RELATIONAL dbs as well as to other Object? [Please note what I'm asking - I'm won't be too interested if someone claims that Objectivity is the BEST Object db, if it's very slow compared to the typical RDBMS]. 4). Given the overhead of learning a new way of doing databases, have people realized benefits in utilizing this new technology? 5). Finally, any estimates on the long-term viability of the firm - they are farily new, and the question always comes to mind, is will they still be around in 5 years? And in the short-term, how good is their technical support? Thanks in advance - please send mail, and I'll summarize and psot to the net if I get anything useful. Ihor Kinal att!trumpet!ijk
