NT-W2K yields better disk i/o than Linux on a machine like that. Running things like OLTP on Linux is not a good idea right now. $0.02 |-----Original Message----- |From: Reinhard Habichtsberg [mailto:Reinhard.Habichtsberg@unilux.de] |Sent: Wednesday, August 16, 2000 1:08 PM |To: informix-list@iiug.org |Subject: Build a new Informix Server - some questions | | |Hi Informixer, | |we want to build a new Informix Database Server. |The goal is a high speed system which answeres the database queries |especially in OLTP mode in a very short time. We have to use |IDS2000 9.2x. The clients are running with Windows NT 4.0. |The queries are send to the database engine via Informix-ODBC. | |In the beginning the DBMS has to serve up to 50 users, later it |will be 100 - 150 users. There will be "read or write peaks" |if the application asks for reading or writing or analysing the data |of an production order. | |Do you agree that the following configuration is suitable: | |Processor: Intel Pentium III XEON 700 MHZ |SLC : 1 MB |Type : 4-way Processor |Number : 2 | |RAM : 1 - 2 GB with ECC | |Raid 10 | |Operating System: SuSE Linux 6.x or 7.0 | |Some people say that it is no possible to use raw chunks with Linux. |You have to build your chunks with Cooked Files. Is that |really a disadvantage? | |Some people say that there are problems or limitations in |taking advantage |of the multiprocessors with Informix and Linux. Does anyone |has experience therewith? | |What can be done force the IDS to spread certain threads to |the available processors?. |Is that possible and usable for OLTP or is that a feature |(PDQ) only meaningful with |Decision Support Queries. | |Any help will be appreciated. |TIA |Reinhard | |
as everything in life that depends .... 100 to 150 users doesn't seem to be so much. We run 50 users on a linux server with one AMD K7-700 and 512 MB Ram. The load is very low and the machine is basically sitting idle. The engine is IDS 7.30 for linux and has problems with SMP support (and other problems) but runs quite reliable. I did a quick test with 9.20 and most of the issues seem to be fixed (didn't try on SMP hardware, yet). And 9.21 for linux is supposed to be even better. Best to get a trial version of 9.2x and see how it can handle the load. I would avoid NT on the server side, if possible. NT makes a nice client but a horrible application server. Anyway you will probably need an NT server for profiles and logins. It sounds like _absolutly_ nonsense (ie bullshit), but I'll assume you _have_ done testing with "RedHat Enterprise Edition" or another distro with raw-devices. Please give us test-details and results.
