Hi dbas, A quick ( and a silly Q for most of you) Can charecters like @, # , $ , % , & be a part of the name of the "INFORMIXSERVER" ? Is there any issue in using them? I checked the ans online, but it does'nt say anything of this sort. It just say that we can use max of 18 char. Can anyone pls clarify. Thanks in advance. regds, Srini -

Can anyone pls clarify. @ won't work because of dbase@server@other will confuse everything (where INFORMIXSERVER is presumed to be server@other). # probably won't work reliably; it gets used to mark comments. The others might work, but you would be foolish to try them; something will misinterpret your intentions, and sooner rather than later. Stick with [A-Za-z0-9_] if you can; if you want exotic characters, add just dot and dash ('.' and '-') and experiment with it, and don't come crying to anybody if it doesn't work (even if it used to before you did the upgrade or added the new machine with a new type or version of operating system).
$ will be interpreted by the shell if the shell ever reads the line (guaranteed!). Why do you want to do this?

You cannot use dashes ('-') in DBSERVERNAME or DBSERVERALIASES so not in INFORMIXSERVER either. I have a hostname with a dash in it (dash is valid in hostnames) and I had to name the server with an underscore instead. Art S.
