TEMP dbspace activity is logged?
Posted in 1995
Using Informix 7.11:
In my testing, it appears that temporary table activity still generates
physical logging, even when a temporary dbspace (and corresponding
DBSPACETEMP setting) is used. Explicit and implicit temporary table
references still fill the physical logs and still generate (often lengthy)
checkpoints. Weren't temp dbspaces designed to prevent this?
I tried 3 scenarios, and used "onstat -R" to monitor the number of dirty
pages accumulating in the LRU buffers (yes, I had the system to myself).
When the "dirty" number went up, I assumed that logging was occurring.
Here are my scenarios:
1) Opening/fetching from a SCROLL cursor using an ESQL/C program
2) SELECT * FROM MY_TABLE INTO TEMP X WITH NO LOG
3) SELECT * FROM MY_TABLE INTO TEMP X
Scenarios 1 and 2 seem to generate log records for the creation/deletion
of the temporary table, while scenario 3 seems to log record insertion
as well. However, the OnLine manual (7.1) tells us "OnLine does not
perform any physical logging in temporary dbspaces" (pg 14.21), so I
expected *no* physical logging at all.
Informix technical support assures me that it's working correctly, but
my interpretation of the manual (and of the purpose of temp dbspaces)
says otherwise. Recently, I saw another post asking a similar question.
Has anyone else verified this? Is it a known problem, or is there some
flaw in my methodology?
