Recent gateway problems

The gateway between the informix-list and comp.databases.informix now appears to be working smoothly, again. Here's a quick recap of the recent problems: The day I left for IWUC93, the main domain name server for Emory was changed in an attempt to add a new sub-net, which I learned after the fact. Due to some miscommunication between two departments, the changes weren't done quite right. The ultimate result was that c.d.i articles couldn't be sent through the gateway to the mailing list. When I learned of this in one of my telephone check-in's, I had that half of the gateway shut down. Everything else appeared from here to be going OK. Hope it was. When the DNS problems were cleared up around mid-week, the fellow watching the list and gateway in my absence turned the newsgroup-to-list half of the gateway back on. Unfortunately, there were so many articles waiting to be sent by then that the maximum day count for Usenet articles on the mailing list side of the gateway was exceeded, and that portion of the gateway shut down again. There is a maximum number of articles per day to limit damage from mail loops, etc. All of this was finally cleared up this past Saturday, July 17. So far as I know, no articles or list messages were lost, though I'm sure there were several surges and some threads that appeared more out of order than usual. As a side note, it would have been much easier to handle these problems if there had been Internet access from the conference. I think there would also have been many more people using the conference e-mail system if it had been linked to the outside world, and of course my first choice is to be directly connected to the Internet. I'm going to lobby strongly for that next year (assuming I get the chance to go again :-)). Sorry if these problems caused any inconvenience.
