Dynamic page lengths in reports
Posted in 1994
Greetings people, We write reports for our customers that must be able to handle being printed on various and sundry printers with different page lengths and orientations. We don't know which printer, page length, or orientation will be selected until runtime when the user selects a printer for output. What we want to find out is if anyone has come up with a good way to deal with this. Having a report compiled for 59 lines, 60 lines, 66 lines, 80 lines is ridiculous and redundant. We went back to 3GL type report writing. Our reports only have ON EVERY ROW clauses with PAGE LENGTH 1. This prevents informix from doing formfeeds at 66 lines whether or not we want them. We set variables for page counting, line counts, etc. and handle formfeeds ourselves. This also means we have to manually handle group breaks too. What a drag. What we really would like is some dynamic way of telling informix the page length of a report at runtime. Then we could take advantage of all the cool reporting functions like page header and page trailer, etc. (Informix, are you listening? This would be a REALLY nice enhancement!!!!) Thanks for listening (reading). Does anyone else have really cool ways of handling this problem? -- Alan Goodman | Data Systems Support Sr.Programmer/Analyst | 1228 Shelly Ct. internet : alan@dssmktg.com | Orange, CA 92668 USA bangpath: uunet.uu.net!dssmktg!alan | Voice 714-771-0454 Fax 714-771-3028
