Fatal error in shred memeory creation
Posted in 2007
After a power failure, IDS 9.21 on HP-UX 11 refused to start, with oninit failing at "Initializing rhead structure" / "Fatal error in shared memory creation" and the online log showing shmmax too small, multiple segments created, "semget: errno = 28" and "create_vp: cannot allocate memory". Respondents blamed kernel tuning, suggesting SHMMAX/semaphore parameters be set per the release notes (or ONCONFIG BUFFERS/SHMVIRTSIZE/SHMADD reduced), and one joked RAM had been removed. The poster's resolution: the UNIX admin restored a system backup taken before the power failure, and the server came up normally.

I am running IDS 9.21 on HP-UX 11 on a test box trying to test upgrade.
Whilst i was away on holiday recently there was a power failure and now I get
Fatal error in shared memory creation when I try to run oninit.
The online .log shows
08:49:53 Informix Dynamic Server 2000 Started.
08:49:53 shmmax is configured too small to allow a single resident+virtual
segment.
Multiple OS shared memory segments will be required
08:49:53 Could not create single shared memory segment with resident and
non-resident par
titions. Proceeding to create 2 shared memory segments instead.
08:49:54 Segment locked: addr=0xc1307000, size=92946432
08:49:54 Segment locked: addr=0xc1307000, size=92946432
08:49:54 semget: errno = 28
08:49:54 create_vp: cannot allocate memory
if I run oninit v I get
hps02(informix): oninit -v
Checking group membership to determine server run modesucceeded
Reading configuration file '/users/informix/etc/onconfig.hps02'...succeeded
Creating /INFORMIXTMP/.infxdirs ... succeeded
Creating infos file "/users/informix/etc/.infos.hps02" ...
"/users/informix/etc/.conf.hps02" ... succeeded
Writing to infos file ... succeeded
Checking config parameters...succeeded
Allocating and attaching to shared memory...succeeded
Creating resident pool 10414 kbytes...succeeded
Creating buffer pool 80002 kbytes...succeeded
Initializing rhead structure...FAILED
oninit: Fatal error in shared memory creation
Any ideas before I resort to rebuilding server from scratch again !!!

It looks from the error messages that your kernel config isn't up to
scratch. Check in the release notes for what parameters were set to what
values and check that your kernel config is similar.

Hi,
It seems your OS settings for SHMMAX are not large enough to fit the
shared memory you want to acquire in onconfig.
Modify your SHM/SEM system vars on the test box according to your
original system.

Sue,
I suggest that you tune the OS of the server to allocate one big
memory chunk rather then multiple smaller ones. You can use ipcs -m to
determine the number of segments allocated by Informix. Maybe you need
to reduce the amount of memory allocated by Informix (BUFFERS,
SHMVIRTSIZE , SHMADD) and try to startup the server. Shmget allocates
shared memory, for me it shows that your kernel is not tuned correctly.

FYI - My UNIX Administrator has restored a system backup taken before the power failure and my Database server is now up and running.
