Is it possible to implement HDR
Posted in 2017
A user with a rootdbs made of two chunks (rootdbs.000 and rootdbs_p_1.000) asked whether HDR is possible, after an ontape physical restore (ontape -p) on the secondary failed with "Cannot Open Primary Chunk ... errno = 2/9" for rootdbs_p_1. Respondents (Kagel, Haarmann, Legner) said multiple chunks per dbspace are fine and irrelevant to HDR: the restore simply requires every chunk file/device to pre-exist on the secondary at exactly the same path/name (note rootdbs_p_1 vs rootdbs_p_1.000), with the same size (files may be zero-length but space must be available) and correct informix ownership/permissions; later chunk additions must also be mirrored. No confirmation from the original poster is recorded.

Hello All
My production server consists of two different rootdbs chunks.
Is it possible to implement the HDR in this scenario, because while using
ONTAPE to taking backup and for physical restore we are getting an ambiguity
in chunks. how to resolve this.
I think the only way is to make the rootdbs chunks in production server as one
using dbexport and dbimport.
Suggest me please.
Hi,
What is meant by "getting an ambiguity in chunks"?
Regards,
David.

It should not be an issue affecting whether you can set up HDR or not. The
archive and restore goes dbspace by dbspace starting with the rootdb
dbspace, so as long as the same chunk files are available on the secondary
and each is at least as big as it is ont he primary, the physical restore
should complete without a problem.
What ambiguity are you seeing or expecting?

My primary server rootdbs is having two chnaks
rootdbs.000 and rootdbs_p_1.000
As a part of implementing HDR, After taking ontape backup of primary server
and restoring to secondary server using ontape -p. i am getting below error.
15:55:28 Warning: stat() failed for chunk file E:\\\\informix\\\\storage\\\\rootdbs_p_1
15:55:28 Cannot Open Primary Chunk 'E:\\\\informix\\\\storage\\\\rootdbs_p_1', errno = 2
15:55:28 oninit: Cannot open chunk 'E:\\\\informix\\\\storage\\\\rootdbs_p_1'. errno = 9
If i created the rootdbs_p_1.000 it is also throughing an error like rootdbs
is differ from the ontape backup.
So that im asking like, Is it mandatory to be having the rootdbs as one chunk
while working with ontape?
Hi,
you can split the rootdbs over any number of chunks up the limits same as
other dbs.
Ontape has no restrictions here.
The point is, when restoring on a second machine the chunks need to be present
at the same location.
(with the correct access rights).
Also, if you add a chunk later for any dbs, this will fail if the secondary
machine cannot add the
same chunk on the other host.

Any dbspace can have as many chunks as you want. This, at this restore
stage, is not about HDR, but about restoring a backup.
What a restore expects on the target system is:
- files or devices defined for any chunk to be restored, so in your case
for any chunk existing on the primary
-> your errno 2 indicates this wasn't the case for rootdbs_p_1 --
what is this in relation to rootdbs_p_1.000 ?
- files can be empty (zero size), but storage space must be able to
accommodate full chunk sizes
- files/devices must have proper permissions - should be the case if you
created them as user informix
Maybe you're confusing rootdbs_p_1 with rootdbs_p_1.000 ?

Andreas

No. However, the files for each chunk MUST:
1. already exist as files (they can be zero length, but they have to
exist)
2. have to be in the same location/path as on the primary
3. have correct permissions as on the primary
