Using relative path for dbspaces?

Hoping to get some opinions and issues, if any, on utilizing a relative path
for dbspaces. We are running an IDS7.30FC8 engine on Digital UNIX 4.0D.
Current root dbspace is as follows:
/prod/informix/links/rootdbs (This is a symbolic link to /dev/rz9c)
Proposed relative path idea:
cd /prod/informix/links (This is where we would need to be when starting
engine (oninit -v), and/or adding spaces (onspaces))
./rootdbs (This is still the same link)
This would allow us to utilize a level 0 archive/restore between two
different instances on the same physical UNIX machine.

Informix does not allow relative paths in the onspaces command (or the
equivalent in onmonitor).

Informix locates the rootdbs based on an entry in the onconfig file at startup.
The rootdbs has the names of the other devices assigned to the database.
If the alternate environments are on the same machine using the same link names
they both could not be active at once. You could switch environments by renaming
the links to point to the drives you want to use. If yo do indeed find a way to
do both at once on the system host, please tell us how you did it.
