Then a particularly opinionated chap in Informix Advanced Technology assured me that medium and high were often only useful in SAP sites or sites of that ilk, and that careful consideration should be given to evaluating and comparing the performance gains of an USL vs USM or USH. He didn't say it in quite those words, of course, but the bruises are subsiding... :-) And in this particular case, he was proven right, because he got much better performance with a given query than I could.
