CGI or data director for web?

Hi, What is better to use? I've to make an application which should connect to a Informix Universal Server 9.01 (HP_UX 10.20). The client is a PC (Win95, NT, Next 4.2) with HTML and jdk 1.1.6. What are advantages and drawbacks for cgi? and for data director? Thanks
Data Director is just a client development tool. There are a few flavors, WebDatablade and VB come to mind. The Webdatablade itself can be used either as a cgi application (webdriver) or as NSAPI or ISAPI extensions to webservers that support these interfaces. There are advantages and disadvantages to using the web datablade over writing your own cgi applications, but you'll have to weigh these our depending on what you are trying to accomplish and what web server you are using. If you have a NSAPI or ISAPI enabled web server, then you can reap performance benifits over cgi applications by using these interfaces. There is also an issue of what languages you would use for you cgi programming. Depending on which you choose will determing things like startup overhead, database connectivity performance, the ability to do things like connection pooling, etc. One thing I can tell you for sure, upgrade your Informix engine to the 9.14 release, you'll find it much more stable. You have also mentioned jdk 1.1.6 so I assume you are using java in there somewhere as well. This raises the possibility that you may have JDBC or RMI as an option for connecting to the database.
