Informix 10 FC7- unstable version of Informix
Posted in 2008
A site upgraded to IDS 10.00.FC7 and, a week later, hit production hangs and assertion failures (af files) on queries that otherwise ran fine; IBM support simply said FC7 was unstable and to move to xC8, without supplying defect numbers. Others reported similar advice, rumours of SQL optimizer problems in xC7, and a link to an IBM support doc. Participants who had moved to xC8 (from UC6) reported it stable and one said it fixed archive/timestamp oddities, but no root cause or confirmed fix for the original poster's problem is recorded.

We had a very bad experiance with Informix 10 FC7 on our production box last week. This happened after a week after upgrade. The system started hanging and throughing af files but the same query can be run other times. When Tech support was called, they ultimately told us to upgrade to FC8 as FC7 is unstable version. Just curious whether anybody else had the same experiance? Did upgrading to FC8 helped? thankyou Pat Kote --------------------------------- Be a better friend, newshound, and know-it-all with Yahoo! We just upgraded from UC6 to UC8 and so far so good. We chose UC8 because it was available, not because we heard that UC7 was unstable. Did the support person provide you with defect or bug#'s that are fixed in FC8? Mike
No. The e-mail just said, go to FC8 as FC7 is unstable. There is an e0mail chain on IIUG.org which says FC7 might have SQL optimizer issues. I have posted on this very question a few weeks ago. Support has been unwilling/unable to provide the defects for not staying on xC7... The list is supposedly too long. I haven't been able to create all of the issues that you discribed in this chain and haven't seen even a minor improvement with moving to xC8. But I'm sure that isn't because the Engine (old software archtechure). We have had limited problems since moving to xC7 but because of issues with xC5 we are taking IBM supports advice and moving to xC8 as quickly as testing will allow. Cutting over in less then 30 days. I would upgrade and test some of the issues you have. What version did you come from? I just completed an upgrade to UC8 for one of my customers. Within UC6, we
were experiencing an issue where the archive information within "oncheck -pt
| tail" did not match the archive information within "onstat -g arc"; the
workaround I came up with was to perform two archives back to back in order
to get a valid archive: "oncheck -pr |tail" matching "onstat -g arc".
We were also experiencing rapid timestamps, sometimes performing a 360 in a
single day! Performing the twice-archive workaround alleviated some of the
effects of this issue until we were able to get the archiving issue resolved
in UC8. We loaded it to our development system (no issues), moved the
engine into our customer's UAT for two weeks (no issues again), moved it
into a production server (no issues for three weeks), migrated it to the
three remaining production instances this past weekend (no issues thus far).
Take care.
