But it is harder to find the answer when the server is
not on the same machine as the client.
The only imperfect way I know of is to interrogate SysTables
for the Owner of the tabname ' VERSION' (yes, there's a blank in there).
Unless, that is, someone cares to enlighten me...

Doesn't that just reflect the install version and not subsequent
upgrades?

It's not quite that simple. If you upgrade the server and it has
something different in the catalog (or elsewhere in the reserved
pages, or ...), then the version gets changed. At least, that's
more or less my understanding. But you're right, it isn't guaranteed
to be the same as the UC9X3 version that you've got installed, and
that's why I said it was an imperfect method. I think it is usually
reliable to the 7.24 vs 7.30 vs 7.31 level, but I'm not even certain
of that.
So, I'm still hoping someone will enlighten me how to determine the
exact version that's running on the remote server without using rlogin
and running onstat or oninit on the remote machine...

Maybe this should be added as part of the return of dbping???? I'm sure
if Informix release the dbping src somebody would sort it out for
them;-)
